Senior Software Engineer (Remote)

About the role

GiveDirectly delivers cash transfers to people living in poverty across multiple countries. This Senior Software Engineer role will build the systems that power donor platforms, recipient payments, and crisis‑response tools. It is a hands‑on position with real ownership, and you may join one of several engineering teams.

What you'll do

• Design and build scalable, reliable systems that power core operations such as donor platforms, payments to recipients, or crisis‑response tools.
• Own end‑to‑end development from architecture through deployment and monitoring.
• Improve developer workflows by strengthening CI/CD, reducing manual steps, and increasing test coverage.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to translate real‑world needs into tools for program delivery.
• Debug production issues with root cause analysis and long‑term fixes.
• Help shape the tech roadmap with a focus on scale, maintainability, and recipient experience.

What they're looking for

• 4+ years of industry experience creating production‑caliber software and systems.
• Experience with backend architecture including databases, cloud services, APIs, and deployment infrastructure.
• Proficiency in strongly‑typed, object‑oriented languages such as Java, C#, or Go and scripting languages such as Python or Ruby.
• High degree of ownership and autonomy, proactively improving systems and leaving codebases in a better state.
• Strong analytical skills and communication, able to break down complex problems and collaborate with cross‑functional partners.
• Bonus: experience with Python and AWS in production, and with payments or microservice/serverless architectures.
